Boyle's 'Trance' Reveals Plot Details and Casting Rumors

If you didn’t already sense it by now; Danny Boyle can do pretty much anything.  And what’s next for the man who’s gone from films about drug addicts...to Indian slum-dwellers...to unfortunate hiking accidents?  Well, he’s already been tapped to direct the opening ceremony at the 2012 Olympics. But that doesn’t mean the busy guy can’t get another movie off the ground before he heads off to create an athletic song-and-dance. Why not, really?

As such, Boyle’s recently announced that he’s moving ahead with a film called Trance, which he’ll film this fall and then pump the breaks on for the Olympiad; afterwards he’ll return to complete his editing process with hopes of releasing the film by the Spring of 2013.  We’ve also heard that the delightful Michael Fassbender (that fellow who went from Inglorious Basterds to, well, everything) is in talks to star. Ace. So what’s it about?

At face value, Trance is a heist film, a remake of a film from 2003 about a group of thieves (led by Fassbender) who snatch a prized painting from an auction house.  Problem is, their inside man (who’s of course the only one who knows where the stolen painting’s been stashed) gets thumped on the head, and can’t remember where he’s hidden it.  Now our unlucky band of criminals must outrun the cops as they try to get the truth from Forgetful Fred, who they’re almost sure is double-timing them.  And what’s a fool-proof way to uncover buried memories? Obviously, you hire a hypnotist. A saucy female hypnotist, if you like (unfortunately, she’s yet to be cast.)

So that explains why this one’s called Trance, and the plot seems engaging.  I mean, Boyle’s already done a movie about a post-apocalyptic UK that’s overrun by...well...we don’t like to use the word “zombies”...but zombies.  Totally zombies.  Knowing that, and his twisted early films (Shallow Grave and Trainspotting), I think the man can find his way around a heist film.  And I don’t doubt that a good number of people will be chomping at the bit to see him try.

Since the film’s still in its early days, and won’t be out for over a year, the casting rumors might not extend beyond Fassbender for a while; but he’s the right kind of actor to build a lesser-known cast around, if that’s what Boyle’s aiming for.  But let’s be honest, whatever his end-game is, Boyle’s the kind of director who could try his hand at Saturday Morning Cartoons and probably still reap in the accolades, and it’d be nothing less than he deserves.

Trance should hit theaters in Spring 2013, and we’ll keep you posted until then.
