Monday, May 9, 2011 at 6:02PM They're Back! Joaquin Phoenix & Phillip Seymour Hoffman Confirmed for Paul Thomas Anderson's Next Film
The man who was responsible for creating Punch Drunk Love, one of my all time favorite movies has plans to dust off the 'ol camera and bust out the other various pieces of filmmaking equipment again soon to helm an exciting new untitled project formally known as The Master.
That's right director Paul Thomas Anderson will return to the motion picture biz to make a film starring previously retired actor Joaquin Phoenix (Awesome rap artist) and Oscar winner Phillip Seymour Hoffman, according to Deadline. This will be the first film Anderson has worked on since his smash hit There Will Be Blood back in 2007.

In the untitled film, Hoffman will play an L. Ron Hubbard-type character named Lancaster Dodd also known as the Master, who after his horrific experiences in WWII returns to America and creates his own religion. Dodd meets a down on his luck drunk loser named Freddie Sutton (Phoenix), whom he takes in and grooms to be his right-hand man. As Dodd's new found form of faith inherits a mainstream following in the states, Sutton begins to question whether he's onboard with Dodd's methods.
Anderson and The Weinstein Company are believed to be looking at several candidates for the female lead: Madisen Beaty, Amy Adams, Lena Endre and Laura Dern are all currently under consideration. The plan is to begin production on June 13 with the film expected to be released at some point during the 2012 schedule.
I'm 100% sold on Phoenix (despite his nutjob personality) and Hoffman being able to bring their "A" games to the table for Anderson, and have no doubts that this film will be anything less than superb. With a capable director like Anderson as the mastermind behind this project, high expectations come with the territory.

Great to hear this is getting produced after it was canceled. Anderson does what I wish others would do with biopics and that's NOT slavishly stick to the facts but verge from them just enough to create a compelling portrait of a pivotal "character" in American culture. This, if it turns out well, along with "Boogie Nights" and "There Will Be Blood", will be an interesting trilogy of cultural character studies, of twentieth century Americans.
This one is too good. thanks for sharing.
