James Gray's next film Low Life is currently on the fast track to production town and has landed him one of Hollywood's hottest actresses in Marion Cotillard. The film also reunites the writer/director with one of his favorite actors in bounce back candidate Joaquin Phoenix (pictured below w/Gray), who has starred in 3 of his 4 feature films (We Own the Night, Two Lovers and The Yards).
Deadline also reports that highly-sought after actor Jeremy Renner is currently in negotiations to join Phoenix and Cotillard as the third lead in the period piece about a woman immigrate from Poland (Cotillard) who sails to the U.S. in search of the American dream. During her harrowing journey to Ellis Island, the young woman, who must care for her deathly ill sister realizes she must trade sexual favors for food and medicine in order to help her ailing sister.
She is warned to keep quiet once they arrive on land, yet she walks away with immigration papers that refer to her as a woman with bad morals. Emotionally broken and with no where to go she stumbles upon a charismatic scumbag (Phoenix) who convinces her to turn tricks for him in New York. It is there she meets the scumbag's cousin, a magician (Renner) who promises her a better life than the one she has fallen victim to.
Shooting for Low Life is expected to begin next year, allowing the three actors enough time to wrap up shoots on their next projects: Cotillard in The Dark Knight Rises, Renner in The Bourne Legacy and Phoenix starring in an untitled drama for Paul Thomas Anderson.
