Robert Zemeckis & Tom Hanks to Reunite for 'Major Matt Mason'

The tandem that changed cinema forever with ground breaking hits in The Polar Express and Best Picture winner Forrest Gump, Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks could be jumping back on the saddle together soon to make the 3-D space adventure Major Matt Mason, THR reports.  The director is currently in talks to helm the film that was inspired by Mattel's 1960s action figures.

Zemeckis has been overly eager to get cracking on his next project, as the director has been linked to other potential projects (How to Survive a Garden Gnome Attack, Replay and Dark Falls) before he decided Major Matt Wilson was the best fit.  I guess this means he'll also be putting the Denzel Washington film Flight on hold for the time being, unless he plans on shooting it before the Hanks project.  That's a distinct possibility.

Like the Back to the Future trilogy and The Polar Express, Major Matt Wilson is being targeted for a family friendly audience hence the inclusion of 3-D.  Luckily, the film will be completely live action not as a CG capture film.

The astronauts from the action figure based story fought against evil aliens and worked on the moon, which is a throwback that should make for a cool bigscreen adaptation.  Plus who doesn't want to see Hanks rocking the spaceman suit Apollo 13 style again?  

The tentative budget has been set at $100 million...We now have lift off!
