Thursday, June 16, 2011 at 12:40PM Russell Crowe to Play Superman's Pop Jor-El in the 'Man of Steel'
The cast for the Man of Steel just became a little more super this week. Variety reports the awesome Aussie Russell Crowe will join Zach Snyder's blockbuster to fill the mighty shoes of Superman's biological, Kryptonian father Jor-El. The role was originally played by the late great Marlon Brando in the first Superman movie.
With the Man of Steel expected to start shooting next month, it's surprising to see Crowe join the film so late and to also take a role that doesn't award him much screen time. Of course, The Next Three Days star isn't the only Hollywood big shot taking a back seat/smaller than usual role next to Henry Cavill in Superman, Diane Lane and Kevin Costner will also play Clark Kent's folks in this one.
Maybe it's been Snyder's super secret plan all along to surround the lesser known Cavill with big name stars (Amy Adams) to ease the burden of playing the most iconic superhero of them all, or he simply wants more meat in the seats when the movie debuts in December 2012.
