Monday, June 20, 2011 at 12:02PM A Hot Elf?! Evangeline Lilly the Latest Star to Join Peter Jackson's 'The Hobbit'
Looks like director Peter Jackson was a fan of Lost tough girl, Kate Austen too, so much that he's reportedly created a elf character just for her in film adaptation of J.R.R Tolkein's The Hobbit. Jackson relayed the news himself via his own Facebook page (The One Ring) last night that he's cast Evageline Lilly as a woodland elf named Tauriel, a new character created specifically for the film.
Jackson says the name Tauriel even comes with a translation, meaning "daughter of Mirkwood". So there's a little backstory on where Lilly's character lives in the world of Jackson/Tolkein. It's just refreshing to see The Hobbit add a freaking female to frolic amongst the men of Middle Earth for the big screen version, pointy ears and all.
Actor Barry Humphries will also be added to the cast to portray The Goblin King, Jackson confirmed. This is a character that Bilbo (Martin Freeman) and his dwarf crew encounter on their journey.
Lilly and Humphries are the latest to join Jackson's star studded cast for The Hobbit that already includes some familiar faces from The Lord of the Rings trilogy Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett (the other female character), Hugo Weaving, Orlando Bloom and Elijah Wood.
And if Lilly was also brought in to replace Liv Tyler, I'm more than happy with that addition by subtraction as well.
The Hobbit is pegged for a December 14, 2012 release, so there's a little time to let this latest cast update settle in.
