In Hollywood's never-ending quest of remaking movies from the past (and the 80's apparently), MGM is developing a WarGames remake with Seth Gordon taking the helm to direct. Gordon, best known for his documentary The King of Kong, has a new film coming out soon with Horrible Bosses.
WarGames, released in 1983, followed a computer hacker high schooler who hacked a military program. He thought he was just playing a computer game, but as it turns out, he was controlling nuclear weapons. This causes a panic since this was during the Cold War and Russia was the biggest enemy in the world. The plot may sound a bit too much however, WarGames was nominated for three Oscars including Best Original Screenplay. I guess the remake has a lot to live up to.
This remake actually sounds interesting and has lots of potential especially since the film will be set in modern times. If you have not heard, lately there are two groups of hackers who have been causing lots of mischief throughout the world wide web by hacking several video game companies such as Sony and Sega and even hacking into the CIA website. Of course, another thing about the movie was the limitations of computers back in the 80's compared to today with computers running almost everything. There are lots of possibilities that can be used in today's world.
This kind of setting does not stem too far from Gordon's King of Kong (which by the way is a very documentary worth checking out) since they both have video games as a subject matter. This project though is still in development with no script as of yet.
