Monday, June 27, 2011 at 11:15PM Los Angeles Film Festival Concludes
As I flipped through the results of the Los Angeles Film Festival and looked up the winners of the various categories I stumbled upon a familiar name. Joe Cornish's Attack the Block received the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature. Congratulations to Mr. Cornish. I have been waiting and waiting for this film to hit the states, and it is nice to see it winning some awards before its US release at the end of July, in limited theaters might I add, and add an editorial 'Boo' because I'll probably have to drive a couple of hours to see it. Hopefully, the addition of a few awards will get that release a bit more widespread.
Other winners at the festival include Stephane Lafleur's Familiar Ground (Best Narrative). After discovering that Lafleur is French-Canadian, I assume the film is set in Canada. It appears to revolve around a twentysomething that is not happy with his life, and one day is approached by a man from the future that tells him his sister is going to be in a horrible accident. The review I read had a bit more meat to it, but that seemed to be the idea without giving too much away.
The Documentary Award went to Beverly Kopf and Bobbie Birleffi for Wish Me Away, the story of country music singer Chely Wright's coming-out to the world after a lifetime of hiding. Not much needed in the way of expounding for this film, it either intrigues you or it doesn't.
