Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at 12:29PM 'Green Lantern 2' Already Being Planned, But Will it Get Made?

Many people tend to think that just because a movie is being planned, it means they have the green light or are on some sort of a fast track. In fact, I've read various news organizations say that Green Latern 2 is already on a fast track. I completely disagree. The "planning" portion of the film doesn't cost much money. Talking to the writer to see what ideas he has, whether the original cast is interested in a sequel, and planning a budget to make a profit is exploratory planning at best. It doesn't surprise me that executives at Warner say that they stand firmly behind the franchise and are already hard at work planning a sequel. What did you expect them to say?
"Oh Green Lantern sucked donkey balls so we're not even going to make a sequel. Oh and by the way, the film just launched little bit over two weeks ago, but don't go see it." Of course they're going to say they think the movie is worthy of a sequel! Meanwhile, the reality is, Green Lantern is a monumental failure for a comic book franchise which I'm sure when they did their focus group testing, it's suppose to be the third best character after Batman and Superman in the DC Comics portfolio. They spent $200 million in producing the film (without marketing) and have only made $118 million...worldwide! The box office revenues for the second weekend plummeted 66% and there is no relief in sight as other summer blockbusters will take over in the coming weeks.
This has probably gotten WB at least a little worried. The fact that they spent $4 billion to purchase DC Comics and so far, they weren't able to get anything out of it other than Batman and Superman which they had the rights to before the 2009 acquisition. What else is left in the portfolio? Wonder Woman? The Flash? To be fair, they do have one ace in the hole in Justice League.
I say GL2 is dead and it's more likely that we'll see a reboot of the franchise if in the small likelihood Warner wants to sink another $200 million in to the franchise.

I would speculate this - Green Lantern is to Warner and DC's attempt to bring the DC Universe to the big screen that the Hulk is to Disney and Marvel's attempts at those characters and universe. Warner MAY have some idea to do a similar interconnected comic book movie series similar to what Disney is doing along with Marvel. Green Lantern may not be a big success but his character MAY be integral to some culminating movie similar to "The Avengers". TWO not very successful attempts were made with the Hulk but his character has been recast and he'll be in that climactic movie when it's out. As Joker said in "Dark Knight Returns", "It's all part of the plan.", so I'd say stay tuned on this.

Isn't Marvel Paramount? I don't know about the Hulk but Thor, Captain America and Iron Man are all Paramount Pictures not Disney
Disney OWNS Marvel.
That IS true, I forgot about the fact that Paramount is who has RELEASED the Marvel movies - and they probably have a great deal of say in those movies as well. I figure though it's ultimately Disney and Marvel that call the shots on those because they own the rights.
