Zack Snyder will not direct the sequel to 300. Not because he doesn't want to or the studio doesn't want him to. In fact, Snyder has told people before that if Frank Miller were to write a sequel to the graphic novel, then he'll be on board to direct it.
Snyder won't direct the film because he's busy directing Man of Steel and I don't blame him. Superman is a much bigger franchise. However, Warner is moving forward without him and is currently looking at two potential directors to fill his shoes. Noam Murro who is currently directing Die Hard 5 is one of the candidates and the other is Jaume Collet-Serra who is the director of Unknown and House of Wax.
My initial reaction to this? I'm ecstatic that Snyder isn't directing this film. I kind of had a bit too much of the slow motion sequences. Everytime I see a Snyder film I walk out thinking the film could have been half as long. In terms of the new directors, I'd go with Jaume Collet-Serra. Unknown was a non-stop heart pounding action flick and it'll be a refreshing change of pace. That being said, the scrip is still being written by Zack Snyder and Kurt Johnstadt. Maybe he'll put inserts in the script like, "(dramatic slow motion scene)".

Snyder's movies - at least SINCE "300" - have been "stylized" and given the whole comic book trend, his tend to be the most stylized OF THAT trend and genre. That a sequel to "300" ISN'T going to be directed by him probably IS the best choice given that the story of 'The 300 Spartans" is such an iconic, stand-alone story anyway. Any story extrapolating events before or after the Battle of Thermopylae would BEST be done as a stand-alone story as well, so that the history could be either exaggerated or adhered to, to dramatic effect, much as was done with "300". I don't really care if they did it in Snyder's visual style or not, but storywise it MUST stand on it's own. If they go further with events beyond what Snyder did on that movie, they'd have to stretch history EVEN MORE just to make it fit in continuity with "300". It wouldn't take much to make an entire series merely an overly exaggerated fantasy in historical drag rather than the celebration of history as myth, or history becoming myth, the way the first one was. I would hope for a title change with no connection to "300" at all but this announcement of the title doesn't give me a lot of hope.
