C'mon was there any doubt there wouldn't be a sequel to Thor?
Deadline reports that Marvel and Disney have given the go-ahead for Thor 2, and are projecting a 2013 summer release with a more specific date expected to be announced later today. Chris Hemsworth will reprise the role of Thor. The only real surprise is that director Kenneth Branagh won't be returning, calling the decision to part ways from the project "mutual and amicable".
Marvel is currently in production with Joss Whedon's The Avengers, so it'll likely put the directorial search on hold for the time being. A big opening in 2012 for The Avengers should result in growing anticipation for Thor 2, which raked in around $437 million from the first film. Iron Man 3 is also slated for a May 3, 2013 release as well.
Maybe we'll have a chance to learn more about Brannagh's departure in the mean time, though it's not exactly rare for a director to leave a planned super hero trilogy after the first or second film, think Batman. I can imagine directors are feverishly phoning their agents now for a chance to cut in on the Thor action.
It's an exciting time for comic book turned movies, especially with big wigs in Marvel and DC leading the charge. Marvel seems to be dominating the landscape thus far, but DC will experience plenty of comparable success when they release The Dark Knight Rises and Man of Steel in 2012.

2012 is going to be one interesting year regarding comic book movies. You got Nolan's last Batman film, and then the long-awaited reboot of Superman, a reboot of Spiderman, and finally a superhero epic in The Avengers movie. Comics' powerhouses are in full swing in next year.
