Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 7:14AM New Trailer for Documentary 'Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest

Often overlooked by hip-hop afficionados as one of the old school, pioneer groups of rap music, A Tribe Called Quest will finally be getting their due in the upcoming documentary Beats, Rhymes, & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest. Actor turned director for this project Michael Rapaport highlights the Queens, NY natives 20-year career of being one hip-hops most successful and influential trios, including the origin of how Q-Tip, Phife Dawg and Ali Shaheed Muhammad first hooked up to their unamicable parting of the ways in '98.
The documentary features cameos and interviews from other hip-hop artists influenced by A Tribe: Beastie Boys, De La Soul, Ghostface Killah, Mos Def, Common, Ludacris and many more.
As a long time fan of these guys I'm super psyched to see this documentary. I saw A Tribe Called Quest warm up for the Beastie Boys about 13 years ago at a show in Portland, OR, and they were absolutely incredible on stage. Honestly, their performance was easily a thousand times better than the Beastie Boys that night, which was funny considering I was there for the Beastie Boys.
The release date for this documentary is unknown at this point, though I'm gonna go out of my way to see it ASAP.
Here's the trailer, featuring some of Tribe's best songs.

They make great music. I saw them with the Beastie Boys and both were fantastic but Tribe was about 12.3% better.
