Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at 8:08PM 'Tron: Legacy' Sequel Gets A Writer

Disney knowing it has a potentially hit series in its own backyard, went out and hired writer David DiGilio to pen the sequel to Tron: Legacy today. DiGilio will replace the writing team of Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, who wrote Legacy but are currently working on a fantasy show for ABC called Once Upon a Time, THR reports.
The bummer in all of this reportedly great news about coming together to make an untitled Tron 3 movie is that Disney, while being ready to work on the next script isn't entirely committed to making the sequel any time soon. The THR report suggests that Tron 3 being made at Disney ultimately hinges on how well a Tron Uprising animated series does when it debuts on TV next year.
Honestly, for them to weigh the value of making a sequel film depending on the success of a completely different medium for this franchise is ridiculous. It makes me wonder what in the hell the creative minds over at Disney are thinking. Sure they spent a bundle to make and advertise Tron: Legacy, and while it didn't do quite as well as Disney likely projected, it still made well over $150 million at the domestic box office and over $293 million worldwide. It wasn't a catastrophic failure by any means.
I thought Legacy was great, even though the story was a little clunky and there was no reason to see the movie in 3-D. Perhaps, Disney will sing a different tune once they read what DiGlio has come up with for a sequel. Any excuse to see Olivia Wilde in skin tight leather again, right?

Where do you get your box office statistics? I think Tron: Legacy made $400 million worldwide, according to BoxOfficeMojo. I saw the movie in RealD, and the few scenes that used it were quite exciting. But I couldn't get over the fact that it was a fake Jeff Bridges. It only goes to show you how digital actors will never replace human thespians.
My overall statistics were a little dated. I should've used BoxOfficeMojo. Thanks for the heads up.
That being said, I would still love to see a sequel to Tron: Legacy.
My hope would be that instead of doing a direct sequel they would do a story that takes place entirely in the "Troniverse" with no mention or appearance of "users" or anybody or any THING from the world outside of that computer universe. They need a really good story idea in which to fit all the cool visual ones they've got before they go on with anything else. Otherwise they just need to be content with the idea that "Tron" is just something they pull out every twenty years or so to realize and visualize with the latest cutting edge in cinema technology.
