Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at 11:12PM Funny Trailer for Brendan Gleeson, Don Cheadle Buddy Movie 'The Guard'

In what has been an uncharacteristically slow week for new movie trailers, the trailer for The Guard starring In Bruges standout Brendan Gleeson and Don Cheadle is by the far the best of the lot. This dark, witty comedy takes us to the not so mean streets of Ireland, where a slightly foul-mouthed policeman (Gleeson) is ordered to join forces with an uptight FBI agent Wendell Everett (Cheadle) to investigate an international drug smuggling ring in the area.
Gleeson's character Sergeant Gerry Boyle struggles adapting to his new African-American partner, often putting his foot in his mouth by referencing a handful of racial stereotypes throughout the movie, which ends up being quite funny. The Guard was written and directed by newcomer John Michael McDonagh, and the film reminds me of a cross between Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and In Bruges. The kind of buddy flick that pairs two unlikely heroes together to remedy the same conflict.
Other noteworthy actors appear as villains in The Guard. Mark Strong and Liam Cunningham (needs to update his IMDB profile pic), who also co-stars with Gleeson, Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds in Safehouse next winter fill out the cast nicely.
The Guard is due to come out on July 8 in the UK, though I'm unsure if it will be widely released yet or not. It certainly looks good enough to go mainstream, and Gleeson's performance looks hilarious.
