Thursday, June 9, 2011 at 3:06AM Universal Wants Roland Emmerich to Helm 'Asteroids' Movie
As a former Atari game console co-owner, my older brother being the other, I used to spend hours playing games like Frogger, Astroids, Pac-Man, Joust, Crystal Castles, Combat, Space Invaders and many more. I'll always have a soft spot for the classic video games of my youth.
Apparently, Universal shares the same nostalgia and is on a mission to adapt Asteroids into a feature film, and have gone so far as to extend an offer to disaster movie guru Roland Emmerich to direct, Vulture reports.
Having just wrapped up the "Shakespeare was a fraud" inspired film Anonymous, Emmerich is said to be currently mulling over Universal's offer, but has been trying to pry himself away from being dubbed the"disaster movie guy". 2012, The Day After Tomorrow, Godzilla, Independence Day? What ever has he done to give us that impression?
The script has been written by Matt Lopez (The Sorcerer's Apprentice, Race to Witch Mountain), with the asteroids of the story being expected to hit the Earth post-destruction (The Earth having already sustained massive damage elsewhere). The humans now live in colonies with another alien species and an asteroid belt alongside them.
I guess we can add Asteroids to the list of Candy Land, Battleship, Super Mario Bros., and any other popular game that Hollywood has or plans to throw on the silver screen. Battleship with Peter Berg directing sounds more promising to me than an Asteroids project with Emmerich behind the camera.
Should Emmerich take the job and become that guy, or should he pass?
