Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at 10:15AM MGM Wants Chris Pine for 'Robocop' Reboot?
We've long know that a Robocop reboot is coming. MGM owns the rights and Elite Squad creator Jose Padilha has signed on to direct it, taking over for Darren Aronofsky. Only leaving us with the mystery of who will be selected to reprise the role of Murphy/Robocop this time.
Word is, according to Twitch, MGM is pining (pun intended) for Chris Pine to take the lead role of the iconic, robotic super cop.
I guess the studio is looking to go younger and more attractive for Murphy/Robocop this time around than was done with a 40-something Peter Weller back in Paul Verhoeven's original version in 1987. Can't say I blame them, though the Star Trek and Unstoppable star is an odd choice in my opinion.
Don't get me wrong, dude is an excellent actor. I just don't see him as a cop or dead panning it well enough as a robot. Of course, the studio knows better and an addition like this obviously would equal more meat in the seats, including more females buying tickets.
I've heard incredible things about Padilha as a director, and envisioned the new reboot being just as gritty, not as campy, as the original movie. If I had my druthers it would go to someone like Christopher Meloni or Michael C. Hall, actors I could easily envision as believable in both roles. Unfortunately, neither actor is likely a big enough star to be in the running.
There's nothing official on the casting front, and as far as I or anyone knows Pine hasn't officially been offered the role yet.
