Friday, July 15, 2011 at 2:36PM Underwhelming 'John Carter' Trailer Hits The Web.
The first trailer to John Carter or John Carter of Mars, as it's most commonly known, just hit the web. I'm sorry to say that it looks average and very corny. I got a vibe when I watched the trailer of a Cowboys and Aliens, Sherlock Holmes suckfest. It has the elements to make a great pre-summer hit, mystery, action, aliens, romance and tons of CG but the trailer just falls short of my expectations; did I mention that there's aliens in this movie.
John Carter is a character from a series of books from Edgar Rice Burroughs (also a character in the film, played by Daryl Sabara) who also penned the character Tarzan. The film is based on the first book of the Barsoom series, A Princess of Mars, in which John Carter, an American Civil War vet, is transported to Mars to help aid the green martians in a civil war against the red martians.
This film does not pique my interests one bit. Though the cinematography looks spectacular, the film looks rushed and very underdeveloped. The glimpse of a green martian, most likely Tars Tarkas voiced by Willem Dafoe, looks cheap as if The Asylum was hired to do the CG. And I've always wondered why alien lifeforms have english accents.
The two leads, Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins, look like they belong in this movie. Overall, I think this trailer is bad, not horrible nor good but somewhere in between. I heard many good things about the novel and upon seeing the trailer, I was a bit underwhelmed. The film is Andrew Stanton's first live action flick after directing such classics as Wall•E and Finding Nemo for Pixar. Stanton is one of two Pixar directors that are making their live-action directing debut; Brad Bird is the other with Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. John Carter stars Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, Mark Strong, Bryan Cranston, Daryl Sabara, and Dominic West and is due out March 9, 2012.

Actually the trailer looks very old style action/adventure. Andrew Stanton is definitely a name to keep an eye out for, so I'll keep following the developments of this film.
Too bad I like Taylor Kitsch. This movie looks as bad if not worse than Prince of Persia, in my opinion.
