Saturday, July 16, 2011 at 3:07AM 'Bad Santa' Gets Not One But Two Sequels?
Bad Santa is quite possibly one of the greatest Christmas films of all time despite its dark, raunchy humor and adult themes, which is unusual for a holiday themed movie. Billy Bob Thornton was great as Willie, the safe-cracking thief who fills in for the job as a mall Santa to ultimately steal cash and other items on Christmas day with the help of his undersized partner-in-crime, Marcus, played by Tony Cox. Now, after eight years of wondering what had happened to Willie after surviving that shoot out with the cops, we may finally know.
The producers of the original film as well as the execs from Dimension films are moving ahead with Bad Santa 2 and possibly 3 to be released through Miramax. Two writers have been hired to write a sequel for the holiday classic, two up-and-comers. The writers, Johnny Rosenthal and John Phillips, have sold spec scripts that are still being developed; Rosenthal wrote Iron Jack, a period adventure film, sold for a cool million in 2009 to Sony and Phillips wrote a comedy, Dirty Grandpa, sold to Universal. Terry Zwigoff, the director of the first film, is not linked to any sequel.
The execs have hired both men to write two separate films with the best script to be made first as Bad Santa 2 with the other script to be used as a third film. May the best man win. Billy Bob Thornton has expressed interest in reprising his role as Willie. The films are said to be about the falling out between Thornton's character and Cox's character. Lets hope that the original cast could make it back, including Lauren Graham, Cloris Leachman, Lauren Tom and Thurman Merman himself, Brett Kelly. If everything goes to plan, we may see Bad Santa 2 around the 2012 holiday season.
