Monday, July 18, 2011 at 6:44PM Universal Says Thanks, But No Thanks to 'The Dark Tower'?

Movie and book fans psyched to see the epic bigscreeen trilogy/TV adaptations of Stephen King's The Dark Tower will now have to wait longer. The last few months everything has seemingly worked against the planned franchise, including the film's own director Ron Howard, who's closing in on deals for two other films (Spy vs Spy?). As if things couldn't get any worse, now it's been reported that Universal has put the kibosh on its deal with the filmmakers, according to Deadline.
Universal apparently decided it was in the studio's best interests not to distribute the trilogy of films and TV series, even after working with the production team in effort to scale the massive project back. Clearly, the project became too big of a hassle for Universal, especially since there's no way to guarantee a successful return on their investment. According to the Deadline report, production was stalled when the studio would only commit to making one of the films and not the entire series, though Universal denied those accusations.
The report also suggested the filmmakers aren't ready to completely abandon the ambitious project and will take it to another studio in order to back it. Who the hell knows if Howard is still even interested in helming the story of Roland Deschain the gunslinger, or whether Javier Bardem will stay on as the lead?
At least, the proposed project isn't totally dead in the water yet. Any positive news about it would be encouraging, and here's hoping we can give you some soon.
