Given that the film cost $270 million to make, believe it or not, this 5 minute sequence was a cheaper portion of the film Superman Returns. In the new Superman Anthology BluRay/DVD set, Warner Brothers also put in this neat 5 minute deleted opening scene from the film. Given that the movie ended up being two hours and 34 minutes long, I'm sure this was just one of the few expensive scenes they had to delete.
Still, you can see why this scene wasn't necessary. In fact, it's almost as if the director had an unlimited checkbook and he decided to just shoot scenes for the hell of it and not because it made sense in the story.

That was mental. It was like an arthouse remake, no dialogues, dark and depressing visuals...
Agree, that was real bad. deserved to be deleted, actually not even shot in the first place!
