Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at 7:05AM New Star Trek Video Game to Serve as an In-Between for 'Star Trek' & Its Sequel?
With the movie industry becoming increasingly involved with video game production it should be no surprise that the creative minds behind Star Trek are following suit with the new Star Trek co-op shooter. Star Trek writer Robert Orci has been serving as a consultant on the upcoming game, and is using the game's storyline to connect the end of the first film in '09 to the beginning of the sequel they're currently working on, according to Game Pro.
Here's what Orci had to say in an interview with Game Pro.
"So one of the reasons we're excited to participate in this game is that we wanted it to be very much something that can fit in between the two movies, something that was in a way--fans will tell you that it's only cannon when it's on screen in a movie; and so fine, Alex [Kurtzman] and I, and Tim [Jones] and J.J. Abrams, and Brian will acquiesce and say that it's not a cannon unless it's not on film. But we would like to think that the game and everything that we do in between to be as close to cannon as you can get because it's actually being taken into consideration with where the movies are."
"So I would say that what's going to be different with this game is that it's going to fit into our new universe. It's going to fit into the Star Trek that we were lucky enough to generate, and it's going to be a story that happens within that universe and that story is not going to be fan fiction. It's going to be a story that fits into our movies, and it fits in between the first two movies. The things we are thinking about for this game very much fall into what can happen between the two movies, and that's exciting for me as a fan."
Though the interview with Orci was a little drawn out, his enthusiasm for the game's storyline in relation to the two films is unquestioned. This is a very cool concept for a game, and with their involvement it sparks my interest in video games again. I've heard rave reviews for Star Trek games over the years, especially for the PC versions, so the timing for Orci and colleagues to get involved in the development of the game couldn't be more perfect.
