'Oldboy' Remake is NOT Dead and it's going to be a Spike Lee Joint?

3 years ago we heard that Will Smith was attempting to set up a remake of Park Chan-Wook's revenge thriller Oldboy and Steven Spielberg might produce or even direct it. Fortunately or unfortunately rights issues supposedly complicated the situation so much (meaning it would've cost too much for the rights) that DreamWorks decided to walk away and that seem to be the last fried dumpling (straw) for the remake. Wait there's more... now this week it appears that the U.S. remake is still moving forward, and a big name director is circling it. Would you believe that big name director is Spike Lee?

Mark Protosevich (Thor, I Am Legend) remains on board as the writer. It’s unclear if Protosevich’s original script will still be used or if he will start writing a new one with the help of Spike Lee. It’s also unclear if Spielberg or Smith are still involved in anyway. It seems unlikely that Spielberg would remain on board if DreamWorks pulled out, however, Smith was the one pushing for the project all along, and he did just pass on Django Unchained. Either way, Spike Lee is clearly an exciting choice (if he still has an edge left) to direct and one that should make this remake a lot more palatable for many people.

Ideally the original should just be left alone along with the other movies in the "Vengence Trilogy" - there's no way they could do the octopus scene again and leave you with the same sense of awe and revulsion, let alone getting an American star to do that scene - FOR REAL - no CGI! Still though, Spike Lee made "Inside Man" into a great post 9/11 New York popcorn heist movie and I'm thinking in terms of making a hard boiled crime movie that stands on it's own - Lee can bust that joint. And boy, does he need something to hit again the way "Inside Man" did.

I think that Spike Lee has the ability to make the film have the same or similar effect as the original. Though I am not sure if a studio would be up for the craziness that was in the original.
