Thursday, July 7, 2011 at 5:17PM Ads for 'Zookeeper' Digitally Inserted into 'How I Met Your Mother' Reruns
Did you guys see that How I Met Your Mother episode last night? Yeah? Did you notice that there was a magazine cover on the bookshelf which looked like an ad for Zookeeper? No? Me neither. In a way, one might think it's genious to digitally alter episodes and use them as an advertising vehicle for current and future content. On the other hand, there's got to be more cost efficient ways of getting more impressions.
To be fair, I'm not sure how much it costs to digitally alter these episodes but if it does cost several thousand dollars, I think a simple banner ad would get more impressions. This addition seemed so insignificant that I don't think 99% of viewers would recall seeing that ad. Of course for the studio execs since they know it's there, probably think that it's blatant but to a person who doesn't know, there's no way they can see that.
Now, what they might be going for is playing to the subconscious and maybe they figured out a way to easily swap magazine covers, billboards, and posters of any given episode easily and cheaply. If this is the case, I can see its value and to viewers, having those things in the background be something current and relevant may not be such a bad thing.

This happens all the time here in NY. When they show reruns of HIMYM, there is always an ad in plain sight for either 1-800 dentist or KFC. It does get distracting.
