Saturday, August 13, 2011 at 7:15AM Production for 'Lone Ranger' Shuts Down

Walt Disney Studios shut down the production of Lone Ranger, a big-budget film with the talents of Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp in the cast and Gore Verbinski in the directing chair. According to a report by Deadline, Disney halted the production (the film was in preproduction mode and filming was slated to start in October) due to budget concerns.
Disney wants the budget for the film to be closer to the $200 million mark, rather than the current $250 million. Verbinski and the production team are trying to find ways to cut off the extra money, but still haven't came up with sufficient cuts to meet the studio's heads demands. The budget concerns may not be jerks and not give filmmakers what they need for their vision, but an economic decision.
This all goes back to how a movie can be considered profitable. Because Lone Ranger is not going to be released during the summer and instead just before Christmas (Dec. 21st, 2012), it might not do well than what Disney is hoping for. Remember, that month has another big-budget film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Brad Pitt's World War Z, and Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained. Now that can definitely ruin box-office dominance for Disney. The studio is being cautious about how much money it wants to spend since these films are popping out around the same time and that can influence theater goers' money. Especially in a month like December, every studio would want to get as much money as they possibly can.
Production will resume once the filmmakers gets their stuff together and cut out the extra cost.
