Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at 12:18PM Guillermo del Toro Speaks On Alfonso Cuaron's 'Gravity'

When you Guillermo del Toro gushing about your film, you know you're doing something right. Having done just that, director Alfonso Cuaron is getting some high praises from del Toro for Gravity. This is the first we've heard about the highly anticipated film (besides its casting changes, more of that later on) from a big name in Guillermo del Toro and its ambitious take on the project and its narrative.
The film has been getting a lot of publicity due to its musical chairs casting changes with Robert Downey Jr. pulling out of the film, with George Clooney then taking on a starring role and Sandra Bullock finally deciding to take on the lead female role that Angelina Jolie and Natalie Portman didnt want.
Here's a quick take on the film:
The story follows a lone survivor of a space mission to repair the Hubble telescope and her desperate attempt to return home to her child.
Guillermo del Toro spoke to MTV about Alfonso Cuaron's project, who's also his friend, an in the major innovations the director is making:
"What is incredible about what they did is, they talked to David Fincher, they talked to Jim Cameron, I connected Jim and Alfonso for that. And what Alfonso is trying is so insane. And Jim said, well, look, you're about five years into the future... it's too early to try anything that crazy. And they did it!
I think [Alfonso] would kill me if I reveal [what they're doing], and in time it will be so publicized. But I think that in the same way that he pushed the narrative in Children of Men... Alfonso and Emmanuel Lubezki are absolutely pushing a new boundary in filmmaking, completely mind-blowing. The way they're making this film will I think forever change certain types of productions. The engineering and the ingenuity of the machines they’ve created to film that way is fantastic. I'm amazed at Alfonso in the last few movies because he's completely transformed himself.
It's incredibly well calculated and very human. Incredibly human. But Kubrikian in precision."
