Friday, August 19, 2011 at 8:05PM Roman Polanski's 'Carnage' Trailer
I do solemnly swear that I will go the entire article without mentioning Polanski's legal troubles.
Having said that, have you ever noticed how every actor that has ever worked with Polanski seems to feel the need to gush superlatives at the very mention of his name? Kate Winslet, one of four stars featured in Carnage recently remarked, "Roman is one of the most extraordinary men I’ve ever met" and Ewan Mcgregor said about the director when Ghost Writer came out that, "He's a legendary filmmaker, he's one of the best filmmakers there is". It all comes across a bit sleazy.
Is it a case of these actors being a bit too defensive of Polanski? Or, could it be that the endless questions from interviewers about Polanski's past force them into making a statement on a subject that they'd rather not get involved in.
Either way, the last two paragraphs of this article are a prime example of how any Polanski film that comes out, good or bad, will always be focused on more because of the controversy surrounding its director, rather than on its own merits.
The film in question is based on a play called 'God of Carnage' by Yasmina Reza in which two pairs of parents discuss their children getting involved in a fight, but as the dicussion goes on it becomes more and more childish. The film also stars Jodie Foster, Christoph Waltz (supporting an interesting American accent) and John C. Reilly and actually looks quite entertaining. Let's hope it doen't have too much of an issue transmitting from stage to screen, it already has the problem of being confined to a solitary flat.
I managed to go the entire article without actually mentioning what Polanski is in trouble for, if you don't know, Google it. This isn't the news and despite my best efforts I'm not Katie Couric.
