Thursday, August 25, 2011 at 10:50AM Fox Looking at Gerard Butler & Katherine Heigl for 'Romancing the Stone' Reboot?

Fox has wanted to relaunch a reboot of the classic adventure/comedy Romancing the Stone (1984) since 2007, and have possibly netted their next Jack Colton and Joan Wilder. According to Movie Hole, the studio likes The Ugly Truth pair of Gerard Butler and Katherine Heigl in the lead roles. Nice to see reboot casting I can agree with for a change.
The original film, directed by Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Back to the Future trilogy) starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, who had excellent chemistry. The story featured a romance writer, Joan Wilder (Turner), who receives a treasure map in the mail from her recently deceased brother-in-law and then heads to Colombia to exchange the map with two goons (Danny Devito is one) for her kidnapped sister. Naturally she gets caught up in a dangerous adventure with Jack Colton (Douglas) instead, and the unlikely pair discover a precious stone that everyone in the country wants a piece of.
It's speculated that Fox wants to start production soon. I guess we'll have to see if Butler and Heigl answer the casting call, they'd be a perfect fit in my estimation. I doubt Zemeckis will return to direct, so finding a new director should be the next course of action, if they successfully ink the two stars first.
Interested in a Romancing the Stone reboot? I could go either way.
