Thursday, August 25, 2011 at 5:12PM Movie Preview: 'Our Idiot Brother'
I'm starting a new segment today where I preview a new movie opening each week, picking what I believe will be the best of the rest.
This week's pick goes to the promising comedy Our Idiot Brother starring Paul Rudd as his family's black sheep or idiot brother. In Our Idiot Brother, Rudd plays Ned an idealist hippy, pot head who interrupts the lives of his three sisters, played by Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel and Emily Mortimer (Good looking family).
You see Ned gets busted for selling weed to a police officer (not an undercover one as you might suspect) and he gets sent to jail, and released early, months later. He returns home to find that his girlfriend has left and took his dog with her. Unemployed and with nowhere to go, Ned takes turns staying with each of his three sisters and of course drives them all crazy. There's a little more to it than that, and this movie likely will become a little more dramedy than comedy over the course of 90 minutes.
What excites me most about Our Idiot Brother is the appealing idea of the usual straight man comedian Rudd taking the reins as the lead funny man. In previous comedies like I Love You Man, Role Models and Dinner for Schmucks (awful movie), Rudd played second fiddle to more outrageously funny sidekicks in Jason Segel, Seann William Scott and Steve Carell. So Rudd is the man in this one!
The movie comes from a director, Jesse Peretz (not sure what to expect) I know nothing about, but also, more importantly sports a strong cast in addition to those mentioned above. Rashida Jones, Adam Scott and Steve Coogan (The Trip) are the notable co-stars here and should contribute to the humor.
I have pretty lofty expectations for Our Idiot Brother and think it could be on par with Bridesmaids and 30 Minutes or Less, as the best comedies I've seen this summer.
