Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at 11:13AM 'Green Lantern' Sequel/Reboot to Be Darker and Edgier

During a conference call today, CEO of Time Warner Jeff Bewkes said Green Lantern "did not live up to expectations - fell fairly far short of those." Obviously, they were expecting a summer blockbuster draw, but what they got was $154 million worldwide and a $53 million opening. The film cost over $200 million to make so this film lost the studio a ton of money. Still, $53 million opening is a decent figure...it just didn't have any legs because everyone who saw it talked about how much it sucked.
However, even Bewkes thinks that they shouldn't quit on this franchise and they should make a sequel. Warner Brothers Films President Jeff Robinov certainly seems to think they should go another direction with the sequel. Says Robinov, "We had a decent opening so we learned there is an audience… To go forward we need to make it a little edgier and darker with more emphasis on action…. And we have to find a way to balance the time the movie spends in space versus on Earth."
Ugh...hey buddy, leave the creative up to the Directors. Just because the Dark Knight did well by being darker and edgier doesn't mean that is what people want. The intergalatic part of the story also made it different and interesting. Personally, I think they need to replace Ryan Reynolds who is more of a comedic star not an action star. They may also need to go with a different direction with a new director. What's your remedy?
