Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at 12:34PM Spielberg & Stephen King Partner with Showtime for an 'Under the Dome' Series?
Showtime has hit a homerun today by joining forces with Steven Spielberg, Dreamworks TV and Stephen King on an Under The Dome series based on King's best selling novel. Spielberg scooped up the rights shortly after the book was published to strong reviews in November of 2009, and as a result we have this rad show to look forward to.
The thriller centers on a vacation spot in Maine that is all of sudden, mysteriously cut off from the rest of the world when a force field surrounds it, causing the locals to turn against each other. So external forces cause internal chaos? I love it.
King will executive produce along with Dreamworks TV's Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank. Now the mad dash begins to find a writer for the series, which becomes Showtime's first genre style series since Dead Like Me aired in 2003. Dreamworks TV also produced Falling Skies over at TNT, and that series just got renewed for a second season.
I have to imagine that HBO and other rival premium channels are a little nervous by Showtime's ambitious undertaking here. King, Spielberg and Showtime teaming up for Under the Dome could put a real force field on the TV ratings once this series airs.
