Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at 3:22AM Gerard Butler Returns to Action Roots for 'The Bricklayer'

I'm glad to see a tough mofo like Gerard Butler has ditched the romcom crap in favor of a new action flick. Butler has signed on to star in the thriller The Bricklayer, THR claims. He'll play a retired FBI agent turned bricklayer who's summoned back into action by the feds when a band of criminals starts "demanding an escalating series of multi-million dollar ransom payments".
The story is adapted from a novel by Noah Boyd, and will also feature an actress to play the Deputy Director of the bureau and co-star alongside Butler's character Steve Vail in the film. It's unknown who the studio has in mind for the female lead, as the role hasn't been cast yet. I'm thinking someone like Naomi Watts would be perfect, and would be similar to the character she played in Fair Game, only FBI instead of CIA.
Butler pushed the envelope with great, memorable performances in 300, RocknRolla and most recently Law Abiding Citizen, so I hope Hanna Weg's screenplay is geared in that direction.
