To some people this girl-next-door hottie might be best known as Jon Hamm's arm candy, but you would be doing yourself a great injustice if that is as far as you looked. Jennifer Westfeldt's film Friends With Kids just premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and was purchased by Lionsgate. Friends With Kids marks Westfeldt's directorial debut, but that is not the only role she undertook as she also produced, wrote, and stars in this little Indie gem.
Westfeldt explores all the good and bad that comes with parenting in her new film. It’s an ensemble comedy where she plays a woman, still single, who after watching her friends basically fall apart with new baby duty, decides to conceive a child with her friend (Adam Scott) with the hope that since they aren’t a couple their relationship won’t erode. At least that's the hope.
With the exception of one of the actresses the ensemble cast put together for this project is amazing including, but not limited to, Jon Hamm, Adam Scott, Maya Rudolph, Kristin Wiig, Chris O'Dowd and Ed Burns. This is going to be a fantastic little film as all six people mentioned have at one time or another left me doubled over in laughter, well, except for maybe Burns, but he's just so goddamn serious all the time.
I'm looking forward to watching this movie with some friends that believe children suck the fun out of a good time. From their point of view, maybe, but kids are hilarious, uncoordinated, balls of impromptu physical comedy and I hope Westfeldt captures parenthood from both sides, because in my experience, even those people that 'don't like kids' can't help but laugh at their sillyness.
