With three more films (Shame, A Dangerous Method, Haywire) coming out this year, there isn't a more exposed actor right now than Michael Fassbender. A full workload hasn't stopped filmmakers and studios from wanting a piece of him either. The latest director to profess his desire to have the actor star in his next film is Jose Padilha, who admits Fassbender is his first choice to play Murphy in the Robocop remake.
Padilha was recently interviewed by the Brazilian TV show GloboNews. When they asked who he was looking for lead in Robocop, Padilha responded in Portugese (Not a great translation) "I can not speak yet, it is too early to talk about, but it has some actors I like. I like much of Fassbender. I'll talk to him now, is a possibility. There are great actors who could do the Robocop."
The director has discussed the remake a lot in recent weeks, and earlier in the week said his version of the film won't be an updated copy of Paul Verhoeven's Robocop (1987). Instead Padilha hopes to explore questions that weren't asked before. I'm not sure what he means by that.
He's reportedly been working closely on the script with Josh Zetumer, and they hope to start shooting early next year.
It'd obviously be awesome if Fassbender wanted to do Robocop, but last I heard he was looking forward to taking a break from the movie biz. I wonder who else might be on Padilha's wishlist. It doesn't matter to me much, I just want to see a new Robocop on the big screen.
