A teaser trailer for the game Dead Island released in February was all Lionsgate needed to see to know they wanted it. Today, it's official that producer Sean Daniel has emerged with the exclusive film rights to the zombie adventure Dead Island, according to Deadline. Daniel (The Mummy, Tombstone) will produce the adaptation for Lionsgate.
Needless to say, Lionsgate is thrilled with its new acquisition.
"Like the hundreds of journalists and millions of fans who were so passionate and vocal the Dead Island trailer, we too were awestruck," said Joe Drake of Lionsgate.
"This exactly the type of property we're looking to adapt at Lionsgate: it's sophisticated, edgy, and a true elevation of a genre we know and love. It also has built in brand recognition around the world, and franchise potential."
Not being much of gamer, I hadn't seen the trailer until today (included below). Now I can understand why the masses were so blown away, and why studios were chomping at the bit to acquire the rights. Zombie movies are always a hot ticket, especially the good ones (Dawn of the Dead, Shaun of the Dead, 28 Days Later). AMC's The Walking Dead has also shared in the success of the genre.
