Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at 10:30PM Price Of 3D Tickets On The Rise, Sony To Blame?

Depending on where you live, you may pay about $12 dollars (matinee) for a 3D movie ticket, possibly even more. The extra $3-$5 is a tariff on 3D projectors and the installation for them by the theaters chains. Understandble. What you don't have to pay for is for the glasses, which are handed to you right before you walk into the theater. Well, that may not be the case starting next year. Sony has announced that starting May 1st, 2012, less than one year away, they will stop paying for the RealD 3D glasses handed to you.
It costs Sony and other studios, on average, $5 million - $10 million to ship those glasses for EVERY 3D RELEASE. For smaller films the cost of the glasses is about $1.5 million to $2 million. The reason why did you didn't have to pay for the glasses before was that the studios wanted you go see a 3D movie for the same price as a standard ticket. However, theater chains implemented a surcharge for 3D causing a price increase.
Sony has two big releases next May, The Amazing Spider-Man and Men In Black 3, both of which are being released in 3D. But what does this mean to you? Simply skip the 3D. Many people believe that 3D has become a gimmick and I would have to agree. 3D doesn't really add much to enhance the storytelling of the film, but if done well, it could envelop you to become apart of that world like Avatar and Toy Story 3. Though there hasn't been a film that has done since the two aforementioned. Theaters may be phasing out the 3D gimmick as well, limiting the number of showings for 3D films.
What about you, GTBP readers, do you like to watch films in 3D or in fantabulous 2D?

I think some movies are worth the 3D price. I didn't feel that Toy Story 3 was any better in 3D than it would have been in 2D, in fact all Disney movies i've seen in 3D have been a bit of a letdown including The Lion King. Avatar and Transformers so far have been the best i've seen and worth every extra cent i spent to see them multiple times. The 3D in these two movies was used to show the depth of the world instead of having objects fly out of the screen at you. It made you feel more like you were a part of the film. Things that are a few miles away look like they are far away and things that were suppose to be closer look like they are closer. Both these movies were made by the same 3D crew and any future 3D movies they are involved in i'm sure i will spend the extra money to be apart of the experience that they create numerous times again. Some of the other movies are fun in 3D too but are very gimmicky. The Dreamwork's movies, Thor and most of the horror remakes have been allright in 3D but nothing like avatar and TFDOTM
Cool post. Thanks a lot.
I don't think Sony will carry through with this or they'll make some sort of compromise when theaters start dropping showings of their big summer movies going into the biggest season of the year. And as for the glasses - just keep the 3D glasses from the previous movie you saw! I still have many of the glasses from the 3D movies I've seen. There's no law that says you HAVE to put them in the collection boxes placed outside cinemas. Now, yeah, if THEN the theaters still charge you anyway - well, then THAT'S not fair. You should only pay for glasses if you don't have any. You can't see a 3D movie without a ticket OR glasses afterall. If you've already got glasses, the ticket should be all you pay for. Yeah, there's an extra cost for the 3D movie, but that's because it's a "premium format/tier" show. It's not like other movies, so there's an extra cost for it's exhibition. (Well, that's what they tell us anyway. I'll go along with it until every MOVIE IS 3D.) Still though, theaters had better FIX their problems with dim projection and less than "premium" exhibition if they're going to start charging more or people should really start calling them on it.
As for just not seeing movies - you'll be staying home and avoiding alot there Unabomber.
