Is there ever a limit of wanting to be somewhere so badly, you would do anything to be there? I wish i could've attended the 68 Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica or as we North Americans know it, the Venice Film Festival. Particularly to see A Dangerous Method and its director David Cronenberg speak about the film and the inspiration, as well as research behind the film, that fed the script from reality and the subconscious.
As you can imagine Cronenberg chooses subjects and themes that introduce audiences to particular emotions and psychological aspects. Remember the idea of trust and certainty in Eastern Promises? How about cause and effect in A History of Violence? Or how about the dangers of loss of control with scientific experiments in The Fly? Sure those are basic themes in his films that only a account for a small (and superficial) portion of his film, but what about A Dangerous Method? Psychoanalysis isn't a topic that you can tackle or express with ease and David Cronenberg explores just that. The story behind the birth of psychoanalysis between Sigmund Freud and Carl Yung is an extraordinary one.
Check the video below for David Cronenberg's take on the story, what inspires him and what eventually helped Cronenberg in choosing his cast:
Cronenberg certainly has a way with words and his humor certainly isn't missing. Here's a quick synopsis of A Dangerous Method:
