Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at 11:05PM Spielberg's 'Robopocalypse' Gets Release Date

We've seen plenty of updates about Steven Spielberg's upcoming films Lincoln, The Adventures of Tintin and War Horse, though it's been awhile, around October since his planned film adaptation of Daniel H. Wilson's Robopocalypse made any waves. That changed this evening, when Deadline reported that two studios (Dreamworks & 20th Century Fox) are going to co-finance Robopocalypse with eyes on a July 3, 2013 theatrical release.
Drew Goddard (Cloverfield) has written the screenplay based on Wilson's novel that was released in June. Robopocalypse is the story of a not to distant future where an artificial intelligence named Archos assumes the persona of an innocent boy. Soon this A.I. or robot takes over the global network and slowly but surely our own technology turns against us. Everything from toys to toasters will go haywire and revolt against it's human owner leading to an all out robot war.
There's no word yet on when Spielberg and co. will start production. They'll probably wait to wrap up shooting on Lincoln first. Dreamworks will distribute the film domestically, while Fox will handle the international distribution.
I'm excited about Robopocalypse and have faith that Spielberg is the best director, other than James Cameron for this epic sci-fi project.

When Spielberg's "A.I" came out and failed to connect to a really BIG audience, I always felt it was basically because it was not the "Robot Sci Fi" story people really wanted. They wanted Transforming Terminators that did all kinds of "cool stuff" - 'yknow, flyin' around, shooting big laser guns, smashing other robots - that sorta' thing. Stuff that makes you want to see it under your Christmas tree. Given the success of the Transformer movies and that there've been 2 Terminator sequels since "A.I.", I wonder if maybe Spielberg's caught up and found a way to build a classic "Robot Sci Fi" story - as "A.I." tried to be - but with the appeal to the audience that's grown up with all the "mecha" wiz-bang.
