This isn't the motion capture suit Shannon will wear as Zod.
Michael Shannon has starred in HBO's Boardwalk Empire and many feature films, yet not moviegoers even know who he is. That all changed once he joined the cast of Zack Snyder's Man of Steel to play Superman nemesis General Zod. The superbly talented actor spoke with MTV about his role in the film, and the motion capture suit he must wear for it.
When asked about playing an iconic comic book villain, previously portrayed in Richard Donner's Superman (1978) in a brilliant performance by Terrence Stamp, Shannon had a lot to say.
"Well I'm not going to impersonate Terrence Stamp--I mean I'm not going to have a British accent, or anything. I'm still, like, getting my foot in the pool, you know? I just started working on it, and...all I can say is it's very well-written and there are a lot of great opportunities to reinvent it for myself. The challenge is for me to do that. There's nothing holding me back, and I think they're counting on me to give my interpretation, so I'll do the best I can...being a general--to me that is such a fascinating kind of iconoclastic character. I can't imagine being a sergeant, let alone a general. He's in charge of the entire military of Krypton, so that's going to take every little shred of imagination that I have. So it's a good challenge because it's a big distance I have to go."
Spoken like a future Oscar-winning actor, in my opinion. I think Shannon will do for Superman what the late Heath Ledger did for The Dark Knight, by bringing his own interpretation into a character we're used to seeing portrayed differently.
Shannon was also asked whether he'll be wearing a motion capture suit for the role.
"[I]t's funny because when I met with Zack we were talking about it before it started and he mentioned that there was going to be a lot of CGI...I said, 'Just don't make me wear one of those silly suits.' He said, 'Oh yeah, don't worry, I know exactly what you're talking about.' I was like, 'It's going to be really hard for me to be intimidating if I have to wear one of those silly suits.' He said, 'I totally understand.' Then I show up and he's like, 'Dude, I swear to God, it's going to be so badass when we're done. Trust me it's going to be wicked."
That cracks me up, because I never thought I'd see Michael Shannon in a big budget movie like this. He's never seemed interested in the bigger roles, so for him to have reservations about wearing a CGI suit is pretty amusing.
Man of Steel will fly into theaters on June 14, 2013. I firmly believe movie fans will be blown away by Shannon's performance as General Zod. Man, I can't wait to see this reboot! Zack Snyder is absolutely going to kill it.
