Friday, September 9, 2011 at 3:09AM Russell Crowe Joins Hugh Jackman for 'Les Miserables' Musical

Can't say I ever thought I'd see Aussie bad boy Russell Crowe star in a musical, but life is full of surprises. Crowe will play Javert in Tom Hooper's musical adaptation of Les Miserables, the policeman in hot pursuit of Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) in the film, Deadline reported last night. The role was linked in previous rumors to Paul Bettany.
Hooper's version will bring the broadway musical written by Claude-Michel Schonberg to the big screen, as opposed to the story from Victor Hugo's novel. Les Miserables is set to begin production later this year, and is a major reason Hugh Jackman's Wolverine sequel was delayed again. The musical is expected to debut in theaters on December 7, 2012 and could face significant box-office competition from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and Great Hope Springs, which will be released the following week.
Les Miserables is just another big movie added to Crowe's full plate that already includes playing Jor-El in Man of Steel, co-starring with Mark Wahlberg in Broken City and a role in the kung-fu flick The Man with the Iron Fists. The musical could prove to be Crowe's most challenging role yet, though the Deadline report mentioned the actor had formed two Aussie rock bands in the past.
I have no interest in seeing Les Miserables, as I'm not one for musicals. I'll have take the word of the critics (good or bad) when they review the film.
