Friday, January 13, 2012 at 2:26PM Joss Whedon Explains Why 'The Avengers' Will Center Around Captain America

I thought the whole premise behind The Avengers was that they were a team of elite super heroes? Turns out, director Joss Whedon has other things in mind about who the focal point will be in the first movie. And it may or may not be who you think it is...His name starts with a "C" and ends with an aptain America.
Whedon explained his game plan of Captain America/Steve Rogers/Chris Evans taking the reigns of The Avengers to Entertainment Weekly.
“So much of [The Avengers] story takes place from Steve Rogers’ perspective, since he’s the guy who just woke up and sees this weird-ass world. Everyone else has been living in it. He’s the guy that feels that sense of loss," Whedon said.
"There is an anachronism to him, and Chris [Evans] and I have always tried to make it, without making it goofy or too obvious, always tried to make him that same grounded ’40s Steve Rogers he was in the other movie.”
It's a cool idea, especially given the way Captain America ended. However, it's a surprise to me, as I thought the rockstar or the best actor of the bunch, Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) would be the main man or the unspoken leader of this superstar super hero crew.
Of course, both Whedon and Evans would be quick to clarify that Captain America isn't the center of attention in this ensemble cast film. Either way, I found Whedon's take on the character interesting and can't wait to see how The Avengers franchise develops with Whedon at the helm. On May 4, 2012 we'll find out when some of our favorite Marvel heroes arrive in theaters at the same time!
