Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at 7:31AM No Makeup = Ultra Realism?

Is not wearing any makeup for a film role, the best way to showcase realism? Now, the majority of working women that I know don't wear any makeup whatsoever but if it's captured on screen, will that sit well with audiences? Alfonso Cuarón thinks so as Sandra Bullock tells USA Today that she shot the entire film, Gravity, without any makeup. Sandra Bullock plays a medical engineer who is sent to space on her first mission with experienced austronaut, Matt Kowalsky, played by George Clooney.
Bullock states, in USA Today:
Our vain little heads are going to be some massive 17-foot image. You are going to see details because it's shot on this digital film that shows everything. It's so scary. There are scenes where you say, 'This is where you have to let go and let God.' And, thank God, there are no nude scenes." She goes on to say,
"God help us all when my face comes rushing at you with no makeup on. I'm going to apologize now, but Alfonso, in a brilliant move, said, 'No makeup."
I like the idea of no makeup for either actor, but I know for sure it will not bode well with plenty others. I ask you, my dear readers, would you like to see more films with this sort of realism? Gravity is also going to be shot IMAX 3D and will open on November 21, 2012.

People forget sometimes I think that we ARE in a new era of moviemaking and cinema. With it will come new aesthetics and styles. I think this is an interesting development. It seems small but really it will do a lot for the look of this. I think this may very well come off like "Children of Men" in space.
