Friday, January 6, 2012 at 2:19PM Gus Van Sant Nabs Matt Damon for Untitled Drama

Director Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting, Milk) will reunite with Matt Damon once again. This time it's for the recently abandoned drama that Damon planned to helm himself, only to opt against it a few days ago. Now the project is back on with Van Sant behind the camera, and with Damon and John Krasinski (The Office) slated to star, according to Deadline.
Deadline reports the film will be "Capraesque", which will see Damon and Krasinski play rival corporate executives. It's assumed Damon will be the Jimmy Stewart type, who arrives in a small town for the first time and starts to wonder whether he made the correct choices in life.
So by my count Van Sant and Damon have joined forces for Good Will Hunting and Gerry thus far, with this new drama making it three total collaborations. The next project will be on an estimated budget of around $15 million, which is very small compared to most of Damon's movies but right in Van Sant's wheel house.
Apparently, scheduling conflicts with Elysium (can't wait to see it) and personal issues led Damon to forego making his directorial debut with this one. I have to say I like the idea of Van Sant helming it better any way, though I am looking forward to seeing Damon direct a film some day. He's already proven himself as a top shelf actor and writer, so naturally directing is next.
No word on when they plan to start shooting this drama yet.
