To Boldly Go Where 'Star Trek Into Darkness' Takes Us...

While the movie universe is preparing to launch more Star Wars, it's the other iconic space adventure franchise that's much closer to takeoff.  There's still over two weeks before a 9-minute preview for J.J. Abrams Star Trek follow-up Into Darkness touches down in theaters prior to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.  However, as of last night we now have a plot synopsis showing fans the mission Captain Kirk, Spock and the rest of the Enterprise crew will accept in Star Trek 2.

If you're the type of theater patron that likes to go into a new movie fresh (no knowledge of the storyline) you may not want to read on...

"In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

No surprise this sequel is mostly Kirk-driven, and should result in even more screen time for Chris Pine than in the first one.  The Shat would love that much attention.  It's exciting to learn that new, mystery villain (Khan?) Benedict Cumberbatch will portray "a one man weapon of mass destruction" (sounds bad ass, right?).

I can't help but feel since Spock bit the dust in Wrath of Khan and with the current Mr. Spock (Zachary Quinto) saying he doesn't want to come back for another film, will the character meet his demise once again?  Man, I hope not for the sake of the series, especially if they're planning a trilogy.

Anyone else like what they've seen from this synopsis?

Star Trek Into Darkness is due out this summer, May 17, 2013.
