Monday, February 13, 2012 at 2:06PM Psychedelic 'Beyond the Black Rainbow' Trailer Released

Right now, it is 3 AM in the morning. I had originally been planning to wait until tomorrow (or later today, rather) before writing this, but after actually watching the newly released trailer for Beyond the Black Rainbow, I don't really think I can put off writing about it. I'm still not really sure of what I just saw, but I can tell you that it looks awesome. Check the insanity out after the jump.
We've been getting quite a few intentional time period callbacks (Grindhouse certainly comes to mind), but this is probably the first movie in recent memory that goes for the "LSD infused 70's" mood. It does it well, bringing to mind some positive connections to Stanley Kubrick. Here's the synopsis for the film, courtesy of Slashfilm:
"Beyond the Black Rainbow, written and directed by Panos Cosmatos, is a Reagan-era fever dream inspired by hazy childhood memories of midnight movies and Saturday morning cartoons. Cosmatos brings a bold, Kubrickian vision to the screen in stunning detail in this sci-fi fable of a young woman imprisoned in an experimental laboratory and the enigmatic scientist who is her captor. Set in a futuristic 1983, Elena finds herself held against her will in a mysterious facility under the watchful eye of the sinister Dr. Barry Nyle. Pushed to her limits, Elena is left with no choice but to navigate an escape from her labyrinthine prison, in the process revealing its hidden secrets."
Well, that makes it a....bit less confusing. Don't expect to see it in your local theater, though. It's set to be released through VOD before a limited theatrical release later this year. Nonetheless, It certainly looks like something to watch, no matter the format.
