Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 4:20PM Dean Parisot to Helm ‘Red’ Sequel

Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest) may not be one of Hollywood’s better known directors, but that could be changing very soon. That’s because he has nailed the coveted gig of helming the RED sequel. Robert Schwentke, who directed the first film, apparently got the boot when it was realized that his schedule couldn’t deliver this film for Summit Entertainment’s planned August 2, 2013 release date. Details are still coming in, but according to THR, it’s expected that the core cast of Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich and Morgan Freeman should return.
Even though Parisot’s last major film was 2005’s Fun with Dick and Jane, he has been keeping somewhat busy by directing episodes of various television shows. It doesn’t look like he’ll be returning to the small screen anytime soon as in addition to this feature, it was also recently announced that he’ll be manning the director’s chair for the upcoming SEAL Team 7 action flick.
Erich and Jon Hoeber, who co-wrote the original screenplay, have inked the sequel. I hope they both watched Hangover 2 and didn't fall into the same mistake of copying a successful formula "to the T". Otherwise RED, which currently stands for “Retired, Extremely Dangerous”, will be mockingly changed to something like “Remade Extraordinarily Depressing”.
