Monday, February 20, 2012 at 10:45PM Four Day Weekend Box-Office Results: Denzel Can Come Out of His 'Safe House'

I honestly didn't think Denzel Washington and co. could pull off a win this four day weekend after an upset loss to Channing Tatum and The Vow. But Safe House was the number one movie this President's Day Weekend beating out Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance by less than $3 million. I calculated the numbers, the first ever that I manually had to crunch numbers for this blog, and here are the results:

There you go. If you notice that there isn't a percentage change this week then you have a good eye. I left it out because it is getting too late where I am and it would take me an extra ten minutes, an extra ten minutes that I could use - to tell you how much my predictions suck. But you can decide that for yourself. Here were my predictions from Friday:
1. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance $24 M
2. This Means War $18.8 M
3. Safe House $15.2 M
4. The Vow $10.4 M
5. The Secret World of Arrietty $7.5 M
According to my prediction, Ghost Rider 2 would top, however, that was not the case. I was off for my prediction for Ghost Rider 2 by $1.6 million but then again I forgot to calculate for a four day weekend. The biggest upset this weekend was for The Secret World of Arriety which barely made the top ten list, placing ninth with a mere $8.07 million. Also, This Means War also had a lousy opening placing fifth rather than my projected second place. Could it be audiences have become of McG or is Chris Pine not a box-office draw? Well, he's not; the only film he has done that had audiences flocking to see on opening weekend was Star Trek but that wasn't because he was the reason why we all went to see it.
Tell, were you surprised by this weekend's results? It seems that word of mouth has worked for Safe House and it will create the opposite effect for Ghost Rider 2.
PS. I loved Ghost Rider 2.
