Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at 2:26PM Orlando Bloom & Djimon Hounsou Go to Africa in 'Zulu'

We've been seeing Africa in quite a few films lately, from the sci-fi extravaganza that was District 9 to the gritty social commentary of Blood Diamond, to the recently released (and reviewed) Safe House. It doesn't seem like a trend about to break, as it's been reported by Movie Hole that actors Djimon Hounsou and Orlando Bloom have signed on to star in the South African mystery thriller Zulu, based on the novel by Caryl Ferey.
Bloom and Hounsou start as two detectives hired to track down the kidnapped daughter of a championship rugby player. As the two cops get closer to the truth, they discover the crime has its roots in the countries' brutal apartheid history. It certainly isn't an original subject for a movie set in the country to deal with, but it nonetheless sounds like it could be a solid mystery that could give us an poignant, realistic view of a country's dark history.
I mean, District 9 was awesome, but it didn't give us a particularly layered perspective of the situation in the same way that this movie could. Let's hope we get a smart movie out of this!

Well this is a studio movie, so it won't give you the insight a foreign movie like "Tsotsi" would. And "District 9" just isn't any comparison with it's sci fi premise. If it can do as well as "Blood Diamond" or "The Constant Gardener" it may work well as commentary.
