With the stink of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World still following him (yes, I found nothing of value with that movie…sorry hipsters) Edgar Wright looks to make huge amends with this next project. He’s attached to direct Johnny Depp in the big screen adaptation of The Night Stalker. The Night Stalker was a TV movie back in 1972 and later became a TV series that starred Darren McGavin (the dad from A Christmas Story). The idea has potential:
Carl Kolchak is a newspaper reporter with an abrasive personality that has gotten him fired ten times from various big-city papers. Now he's reduced to reporting for a relatively small-time paper in Las Vegas. It's here he gets the story of his life. But will the local sheriff, or the D.A., or even his own boss, let him print it? He has an ally in the FBI agent brought in to investigate this strange case. It seems someone is biting the necks of young girls and draining their blood. Can this killer with supernormal powers really be a 70-year-old Romanian millionaire? Can he really be a vampire? And can an aging reporter do anything to stop him?
While the idea of another movie featuring vampires sounds about as appealing as watching children play with a bag of broken glass; the thought of having this movie star Johnny Depp and directed by the guy who, after all, gave us Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead, makes it not completely suck. Depp excels at this sort of thing. Plus, I guess the TV series dealt with more than just vampires (like werewolves, zombies and the like), so maybe they’ll take that angle. Either way, I can see this movie being…I hate to use this word…but… fun. Yeah, I said it, fun…fun, fun, fun. Wait a minute, investigating vampires and werewolves…any chance they can hunt and kill Edward and Jacob? A man can dream can’t he? No writer has been attached but I would imagine that will happen soon. Hopefully this all comes together and we have have a go picture, because it sounds…fun. Sorry.
Speaking of Johnny Depp, when are we going to see a trailer for Dark Shadows? What’s the deal Tim Burton? Hate to bug you about this, but the movie is apparently coming out in May? Can you get on that?
