Friday, February 3, 2012 at 7:11AM Fearless Forecast: ‘Chronicle’ Wins Super Bowl Weekend
So who’s excited for the Super Bowl on Sunday? It’s the Pats versus the Giants, Eli Manning versus Tom Brady, New England versus New York, or is it New Jersey. Ahh, who cares, honestly? All I care about is the latest film releases and who will earn the most cash because I’m nerdy like that and it’s my duty.

Chronicle has piqued the interests of many who are fans of the superhero genre. It really, to me at least, looks like it could be a superhero film with a brain, heart, and three dimensional characters that aren’t post converted from a two dimensional image. With a pretty cool promotional campaign, like remote controlled planes in the shape of the characters flying around NYC, audiences will tackle and stiff arm their way to the theater to buy a ticket. Chronicle will earn $24.9 million.

You can’t really tame the badassery of Liam Neeson but this weekend will be the exception. Last week, Liam and his awesome wolf killing skills (been watching Napoleon Dynamite) in The Grey managed to string together $20 million from audiences while this week it will fair well with $18.2 million. It could be much worse.

After years of playing a wizard, Daniel Radcliffe will take on a new role, being stalked by a ghost. After a major, climatic ending to the beloved franchise, Radcliffe is looking to establish himself far from the boy wizard. I don’t think this is the film to do that and audiences will agree, as The Woman in Black will earn $13.7 million.

Underworld: Awakening and One For the Money round out the top five with $9.3 million and $7.1 million respectively. Audiences by this time have grown tired of dueling vampires and werewolves with the oversaturation of the two mystical creatures. Also, men don’t want to see a Katherine Heigl film before a manly event like the Super Bowl, it’s like removing your keys from the ignition and trying to shift gears.

Here’s the Top Five:
- Chronicle $24.9 M
- The Grey $18.2 M
- The Woman in Black $13.7 M
- Underworld: Awakening $9.3 M
- One for the Money $7.1 M
Big Miracle won't make the top five but would place sixth with $5 million.
