Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 6:21PM Jason Statham to Star in Brian De Palma's 'Heat' Remake

Jason Statham is going to star in the remake of Heat, but before you blurt out “blasphemy”, it isn’t “that” Heat film. (Thank god) Statham has signed on to headline director Brian De Palma’s nouveau version of the Burt Reynolds’ starrer from 1986. For those of you keeping score at home; the Reynolds’ Heat co-starred Karen Young (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) and Peter MacNicol (Battleship). It isn’t to be confused with the much superior Heat that starred Al Pacino, Val Kilmer and Robert De Niro.
The story follows a recovering gambling addict who makes his living providing protection in the rough edges of the gambling world, refusing to resort to gunplay and using only hand and edged weapon combat. When a friend is brutally beaten by a mobster, he assists his friend as they embark on a mission of retribution.
Statham and Steven Chasman are co-producing this film and have re-teamed with Nick Meyer’s Sierra/Affinity shingle. They partnered on Statham’s Parker that enjoyed brisk business at Cannes last year. Sierra/Affinity is hoping that they’ll have the same success with the foreign buyers market at EFM this week.
In a bit of Hollywood bizarre deja-vu, William Goldman has been hired to write the screenplay, the same William Goldman who penned the original. I guess if you’re going to do a remake why not update a film that wasn’t great to begin with and perhaps this time his true brilliance will be captured correctly by Mr. De Palma. Or perhaps not.
